When he seemed professionally exhausted and (self) physically massacred, Sylvester Stallone started from Rocky Balboa in 2006, a surprising reinvention based on the recovery of his own legacy and exposed in a double way. First, the action products of pure testosterone, especially as an actor but also as an ideologue, where it would be necessary to place his participation in the saga The mercenaries and, to a lesser extent, the resurrection of one of his emblematic characters with the very dignified John Rambo (2008). And second, that of the crepuscular films, with an epic of exhaustion, of a social and cinematographic universe that ends, exposed in the various sequels of Rocky and, in a sense, also in a somewhat hidden corner of the dramatic, which does not of the action, of John Rambo and of this Rambo: Last Blood that is released today.

Directed by Adrian Grunberg, who in 2012 had already been an ally in another curious reinvention as a twilight action hero, that of Mel Gibson on Vacation in Hell (2012), this fifth installment of the saga goes straight to the point. It is concise (not even an hour and a half), very basic, even simple (why all those tunnels on the farm?), But also effective. And in his first third he has that twilight tone, of a sensation of vital and moral defeat of his tired antihero, almost becoming a dead man in life.
Of course, the film soon drifts into excessive violence, crime without motivation and the revenge without scruples. The script, where Stallone himself has participated, does not develop even one of the characters and is content to add some biographical data or some thick stroke action that clearly places them on either side of good and evil, so that the viewer never get confused. Stereotype, yes, but dry and skillful in an orbit of pulp style, popular consumption, where there are no ambiguities or complexities. And there is the participation of three Spaniards, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, Paz Vega and Óscar Jaenada, with ex officio works each in his style, in which there is no room for reproach.
Of course, the film wastes the opportunity to connect with fascinating border and twilight film exercises of the 1970s, in which it could well have been watched, especially in the magnificent Mr. Majestyk (Richard Fleischer, 1974), based on a novel by Elmore Leonard, with another veteran character from Vietnam and starring a cousin brother in physics and interpretive style of Stallone: ??Charles Bronson. But at least Last Blood doesn't cheat.
“They were the first to shed blood, not me. It was them, ”said Rambo in Cornered, a fundamental action film of the eighties. And in that line follows the series, although without any message, beyond a world with innocent and guilty. If in the Ted Kotcheff movie there was a gloomy vision of the American dream, here it is difficult to calibrate any subtext, apart from the spectacle of ferocity, and avoid possible accusations (although there will be) of xenophobia with the Mexicans.
